Introduction

Imagine opening social media for a few minutes and seeing post after post about the same shocking story. You might assume that everyone is talking about it, but there is another factor at work: the algorithm deciding what appears on your feed. Social media algorithms are designed to recommend content that they think users will find interesting or engaging. But this can sometimes help misinformation travel further.

How Do Algorithms Spread Misinformation?

One way algorithms can contribute to misinformation is through engagement. Social media systems often use signals such as what people click, share, like, or interact with to decide what content to recommend. The problem is that misinformation can be attention-grabbing, emotional, or surprising. If people interact with it heavily, recommendation systems may give it more visibility.

Research published in ACM Transactions on the Web found that different recommendation algorithms do not affect misinformation in the same way. In their analysis, popularity-based and network-based recommendation methods contributed more to misinformation diffusion than some other approaches. This suggests that the design of an algorithm matters.

Algorithms can also create personalized information environments. If someone repeatedly interacts with a certain type of content, the system may recommend more similar material. This can make it harder for users to encounter different viewpoints or notice that a claim they keep seeing may not actually be true.

However, algorithms are not the only reason misinformation spreads. People create, believe, and share misleading information too. A large review of 423 studies found that misinformation spreads because of several factors involving the source, message, context, and receiver—not just technology.

Conclusion

Social media algorithms can contribute to misinformation by increasing the visibility of content that attracts attention and by repeatedly recommending similar material. However, blaming algorithms alone oversimplifies the problem. Better recommendation systems, clearer platform policies, fact-checking, and users thinking carefully before sharing information can all help reduce the spread of misinformation.
